Business of Pain

The True Story of World Boxing Champion Gabriel Ruelas

(Version en Español)

Business of Pain is a profound exploration of Gabriel Ruelas’s soul, as he opens his heart and memories to Araceli Martinez-Rose. With her help, Gabriel shares with us his most intimate emotions after the glory and defeat, and confides how he’s slowly been able to pick up the broken pieces and reassemble them, ultimately disclosing his life as a World Champ, a broken man, and an unrelenting survivor.

World Boxing Champion Gabriel Ruelas began his life by defeating colossal obstacles, which in turn writhed his destiny with a sacrificed sport and handed him boxing as the only means to prove himself in this world. Far from poisoning his life with the sweetness of victory, Gabriel’s peasant, childlike soul never veered far from the World Boxing Champion within, in spite of being acclaimed by fans and leading a life full of luxuries and riches that were worlds apart from those remote days as a barefoot boy, numb from the mountain cold.

As a child, his family predicted he would lead a useless, mediocre, and fragile life, since it was tainted with death from birth. However, he was determined to prove them wrong and triumph. At the blossoming age of twelve, hell-bent on making something of himself, he underwent an extremely strict routine and adhered to an adamant discipline in hopes of crowning his sacrifices as World Champ and making his dream come true. Along the way, the foreboding shadow of death he was born with turned into Gabriel’s ally helping him lose his fear and transform his punch into pure steel in the ring.

Within the competitive world of international boxing, the birth of Gabriel’s career began as a recently arrived youngster from the Jalisco, Mexico, countryside, when he first entered the gym of legendary trainer Box Joe Goossen in Los Angeles. From then on, his life became a one-sided fight, where everything was in his favor; he turned into a pro boxer and eventually attained his ultimate dream: the World Boxing Championship title. Little did he know that soon after his incredible successes, he would receive an unexpected liver punch in life, with the death of his Colombian opponent in a bloody combat in the ring.

His opponent’s demise made Gabriel kiss the canvas, yet he managed to get up. However, his remorse and uncontrollable fear of his murderous fists of steel threw him on the ropes and landed him in a life surrounded by never-ending emotional debates, which in the end thwarted his boxing career, fractured his family, and ultimately attempted on his own existence.

This is the story of a man’s twisted destiny—the journey from having nothing to attaining everything, then losing it all, and ultimately pulling through as a champ and a survivor. It is an ode to the moments that shape a human being; a true hymn to life when adversity strikes.

Business of Pain Gabriel Ruelas life story and 14  world boxing champions (Azumah Nelson from Ghana, Shane Mosley from USA, Erik Morales from Mexico, Vitali Klitshko from Ukrania, living legend Carlos Zarate, and more) will be published in Spanish by the Baja California Cultural Institute in Fall 2010 and English in Spring 2011;  Business of Pain official release will be at the WBC World Convention in Cancun Mexico to celebrate Mexico’s Bicentenary .The prologue will be written by renowned Mexican journalist and best-selling Latin author, Maria Antonieta Collins & Mr. Jose Sulaiman Chagnon WBC President.

El Negocio Del Dolor

Business of Pain
